The Institut français Italia is based on the great experience of an entire network of cultural institutions (the Institut français of Florence, the first in the world, was established in 1907) and of the Italian and French private partners to succeed in its mission: to continue the dissemination and dissemination of French culture in Italy, at the service of Franco-Italian friendship.

The creation of a new cultural institution, which combines the action of the embassy respecting local cultural initiatives and the link with the territory, allows better visibility and helps identify the actions undertaken under the banner of the Institut français.
The Institut français Italia is part of the vast network of Instituts abroad (almost one hundred).
The Institut français Italia deals with Franco-Italian relations in all sectors: cultural, educational, didactic and university in the broadest sense. Acts within the framework of the bilateral cultural agreement signed by France and Italy, November 4, 1949 and regularly updated.
The mission of the Institut français is to:
- Spread the French language in Italy, especially in educational facilities and on the Internet;
- To promote French productions on the Italian art scene and on the markets of cultural industries and to develop exchanges between the professionals of the two countries;
- Reinforce the French presence in the Italian audiovisual panorama, especially in cinema, which has always been an art in which the Franco-Italian relationship has been particularly rich and fruitful;
- Stimulate the debate of ideas between Italian and French society, in particular on global issues concerning the future of international society;
- Develop university cooperation between our two countries and increase student mobility from Italy to France;
More generally, strengthening relations and exchanges between France and Italy in all sectors.
To achieve these goals, the Institut français is structured in five sectors:
- linguistic-educational cooperation,
- cultural action through artistic creation and collaboration on heritage and museums;
- the diffusion of cinema and audiovisual media,
- the book and the debate of ideas,
- university cooperation.
To this must be added, of course, through the institutes present on the Italian territory, the important dimension of the promotion of the French language, through a range of high quality French courses, diversified and adapted to the needs of all.
