Ezer év közös úton celebrates a thousand years of Hungarian presence in the Eternal City, transforming light into a symbol of memory, spirituality, and intercultural dialogue. Created by Erik Mátrai in collaboration with Márton Urbán, the installation turns the courtyard of Palazzo Falconieri into an immersive stage where luminous forms transcend the walls and unfold freely into space.
Robotic light fixtures project essential geometric shapes — triangles, circles, abstract volumes — that merge and shift through choreographed movements and chromatic transitions. These visual elements allude to the symbolism of Advent and the theme of anticipation, creating a contemplative and atmospheric environment.
The six-minute animation, presented in a continuous loop, generates an intense spatial experience shaped by the dynamic encounter of light, architecture, and perception.
The installation is also visible at night from Lungotevere Tebaldi and will be open to the public until 16 December.
With A Thousand Years on a Shared Path, Mátrai — an artist who places light at the core of his practice — returns to Rome following significant works such as Porticus 3.5 (Palazzo Falconieri, 2017) and Sfera 02.2 (Church of San Lio, Venice, 2013). This new installation weaves together historical memory and contemporary art, celebrating the enduring bond between Hungary and the Eternal City.
