Pitch Shifting Duo
Pitch Shifting Duo | interdisciplinary live art project
Pitch Shifting Duo is part of a larger multidisciplinary project - Pitch
Shifting Group. Visual programming, while musical interactivity, has been
crucial to Pitch Shifting latest practice. Leaded by a Berlin based saxophonist
and composer Grgur Savic, group explores a different types of today’s technology
together with live electro-acoustic instruments to deliver high quality
musivisual language. Although this group started performing pure electro-
acoustic improvised sets, new journey begins with a new member, visual artist
Sanja Star. Group sets itself into the new dimension creating improvised audio-
visual set.
Pitch Shifting Duo - Sanja Star & Grgur Savic - explores new media in visual art
and music. After creating digital collages and animations Sanja Star is using
her own visual instrument to create live visuals with visual
programming. Through coding, Sanja is creating a set of visual semiotic system
that is the synchronous union of music and image. In response to visual
improvisations, Grgur is utilising electronics and backing Saxophone sounds,
which spans from melodic passages to extended techniques like noise, aggressive
confrontation and dissonance, IDM - computer manipulation and digital synthesis,
minimalism and electroacoustic music.
Blending a variety of genres, from social music to electronic music, inspired by
living in New York and Berlin, Pitch Shifting Duo presents perfect balance of
sound and visual contrast, which sets unique mood. We want to explore the idea
of no time and no space dividing old /new, ours / theirs. Our art, audio-visual
performance, wants to provoke feelings of oneness and togetherness. In the world
of separation we want to look in more positive future were we live in peace,
respecting and appreciating our differences living together as a human
collective.
Music:
Grgur Savić, Saxophonist & Composer
Native Croatian, in searching for a more wider and richer musical working space
Grgur transplanted himself into Berlin / Germany. Although very early and
largely involved in a pure acoustic and modern classical music he begins to
discover new fields of more extended techniques like noise, aggressive
confrontation and dissonance, IDM - computer manipulation and digital synthesis,
minimalism and electroacoustic music. Directing a great deal of attention in
fields of music Grgur is predominantly focused on his groups Pitch Shifting,
Heart Shaping and Space Tigers.
In New York he took private lessons with revered jazz greats such as
saxophonists George Garzone and Andrew D’Angelo. Past musical projects include
his Free Willys – conceptual free music trio, The Unleashed Bop Force – post bop
fusion quintet, Mangroove – fusion band.
In between recording and playing shows, Grgur to a great degree creates short
documentaries and movies which are involved in major of his music videos. He’s
original music is available through the CD-s he has recorded, Spotify, Deezer,

Live Visuals/Programming:
Sanja Starčević (Sanja Star) Graphic designer & Visual Artist working in fields
of fashion and music
After working for years as a Senior Graphic Designer in big corporate and agency
environment, Sanja Star started to focus her work more on visual digital art.
She combines digital and traditional techniques creating motion artworks,
digital collages and uses visual programming language to create GIFs, images and
video in advertising, social media, branding and live performances together with
musicians.
Visual artist and designer Sanja Star creates digital and motion collages, using
digital and traditional techniques - like drawing, which can be controlled and
navigated using live Max Jitter - VPL. Using visual programming language
she creates audio reactive visuals which enables her to perform interactively
with musicians creating improvised audio-visual set. A VPL allows programming
with visual expressions and spatial arrangements of collages and
animations. Using code, Sanja is creating a set of visual semiotic system that
is the synchronous union of music and image.
